"I have seen a lot of different wall systems come down the pike over the years, and I think this system may be the best one yet."

New product cuts down housing costs

Pauline Rhoden thought she was going to remodel the home where she was raised but the project took a different turn.

"The walls were held together by termites," said Steve Lewis of Lewis Consulting Services.

In the next few weeks, Rhoden and her 88-year-old mother will move back into a stronger, more energy efficient version of the same home they loved for years.

"It's laid out just like the old house. I'm so thrilled, I don't know what to do," Rhoden said.

Construction on the new home began Wednesday and by Thursday, things were already taking shape. Most of the walls were up and trusses were being delivered.

A new product called Platinum Technology cuts construction time, materials and labor costs.

The 1,000-square-foot, two-bedroom/two-bath house is being constructed for less than $100,000.

In addition to lower construction costs, the product also can withstand 200 mph wind loads, said Lee Martin of Specialty Construction.

Martin, together with Lewis have brought the new product to the local market.

"What makes this product so strong is the foam is a structural polyurethane," Lewis said.

The ability to withstand high winds also helps keep the home insulated and cuts the costs of air conditioning or heating a home, Martin said.

According to Platinum Technology, the homes are impervious to floods and wind-driven water and therefore eliminate problems often caused by mold or mildew.

Rhoden's home is the first of its kind in Manatee County but Martin wants to ensure it's not the last.

Lewis is in the stages of planning a 16-lot affordable housing subdivision called Janelle Estates on Old Tampa Road. Martin hopes to team with him and build the homes with the Platinum Technologies product.

Martin has worked on infill projects throughout the county with a focus on workforce and affordable housing and even helped author the 10-year plan for Manatee County.

While only about half a dozen Platinum Technology homes exist, Martin sees it as the wave of the future because of its strength and the lack of wasted materials.

"This is a breakthrough technology," Martin said.
